Industry application
Polycarbonate Sheet for Machine Guards
For machine guards, buyers need impact resistance, clear visibility, stable dimensions and reliable fabrication. Bakway supplies solid and hard-coated polycarbonate sheets for industrial protection panels, safety doors and equipment guarding.
Machine guard glazing to EN ISO 14120: sizing for impact, not appearance
A machine guard window is a safety component, and its thickness is set by the impact it must contain under EN ISO 14120 — not by what looks solid. Undersize it and it fails to contain an ejected tool or workpiece; oversize it and the guard becomes heavy and expensive. The correct thickness comes from the mass and velocity of what could be thrown, and the distance from the hazard.
Why polycarbonate, and where it stops working
Polycarbonate is the standard guarding glazing because it contains impacts instead of shattering, and stays transparent so the operator can see the process. But it has two limits worth knowing: it is degraded by many coolants and cutting fluids over time, and prolonged UV or chemical exposure embrittles it. For guards exposed to aggressive coolant, a coated grade or a laminated polycarbonate/glass window is specified — a plain sheet that has gone brittle no longer contains an impact, which is the failure that matters.
Thickness guidance for guarding
| Hazard energy | Typical polycarbonate thickness | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Low | 3–4 mm | Slow mechanisms, light assembly |
| Medium | 6–8 mm | General machining, moderate speed tooling |
| High | 10–12 mm+ | High-speed spindles, lathe / grinding zones |
These are starting points. The binding figure comes from the impact test class in EN ISO 14120 for your specific hazard — send the machine type and we will point to the applicable requirement rather than guessing a thickness.
Ageing is a safety issue, not a cosmetic one
A guard window that has yellowed and crazed from coolant or age looks worn, but the real problem is that it has lost impact strength — exactly when it is called on to contain something. Guarding glazing should be inspected and replaced on a schedule, and specified with the coating and mounting that slow that ageing. This is why guard windows are a wear part, not a fit-and-forget component.
What to send for a machine guard quote
- Machine type and the hazard being guarded
- Coolant or cutting fluid in use (drives coating or laminate choice)
- Window size, framing and fixing method
- Any impact class or standard your site requires
Tell us the machine and the coolant. We will specify a guard window that contains the impact and survives the environment, and tell you when a laminate is the safer call.
Material choice
Sheet options we normally discuss
| Option | Where it usually helps |
|---|---|
| Solid polycarbonate sheet | General impact-resistant guards, transparent machine doors and safety windows. |
| Hard-coated polycarbonate sheet | Better scratch resistance for frequent cleaning, sliding contact or operator-facing panels. |
| Flame-retardant PC sheet | Electrical cabinets, equipment areas or projects requiring fire performance review. |
