ESD polycarbonate for electronics: the surface resistance range that matters

An ESD panel is specified by one number above all — surface resistance, measured in ohms per square — and the right value depends on whether you need to dissipate static slowly or shield against it. Too conductive and you risk a fast discharge through the panel; too insulating and it holds static that damages components. The usable window is narrow and application-specific, and it is what an electronics or cleanroom engineer actually specifies against.

The three resistance bands

BandSurface resistanceUse
Conductive10³–10⁵ Ω/sqFast grounding, high-risk assembly
Dissipative10⁶–10⁹ Ω/sqMost ESD workstations, enclosures, windows
Anti-static10⁹–10¹¹ Ω/sqPrevents charge build-up, general handling

Most electronics handling wants the dissipative band, 10⁶–10⁹ Ω/sq — static drains away in a controlled, non-sparking way. Confirm the target range for your process before ordering; a panel outside the band is the wrong product even if it is called "ESD".

Permanent versus topical — the spec that decides service life

There are two ways to make polycarbonate ESD-safe, and they age completely differently. A topical antistatic coating works by attracting humidity, so its performance drifts with ambient humidity and washes or wears off over time — cheap, but not durable. A permanent (inherently dissipative) grade carries the property through the whole sheet, so it holds its resistance regardless of humidity and survives cleaning. For a panel that must stay in-spec for years, specify permanent ESD; for short-term or low-stakes use, topical may be enough. Ask which one you are being quoted — they are priced differently for a reason.

Cleanroom and outgassing considerations

In a cleanroom, an ESD panel must also not shed particles or outgas contaminants. Permanent dissipative polycarbonate suits cleanroom windows and partitions because the property is built in rather than sitting on the surface where it can slough off. If the panel serves a rated cleanroom, tell us the class so the grade and finish match.

Grounding is part of the specification

An ESD panel that is not grounded is just an expensive sheet — the dissipated charge has to go somewhere. The panel needs a defined ground path, and the mounting has to preserve the resistance path to earth. Specify how the panel grounds when you order, not after installation.

What to send for an ESD panel quote

  • Target surface resistance band (conductive, dissipative, anti-static)
  • Permanent vs topical — required service life and cleaning regime
  • Cleanroom class, if applicable
  • Panel size, cutouts and how it will be grounded

Tell us the resistance target and whether it must last. We will specify a permanent or topical ESD grade to the band your process needs, with the grounding detail included.

ESD Polycarbonate: Surface Resistivity Specifications

GradeSurface resistivityStatic decayTypical use
ESD safe (conductive)10⁴–10⁶ Ω/sq<2 s (5 kV→0)ESD workstations, machine covers
ESD static-dissipative10⁶–10⁹ Ω/sq<2 sCleanroom panels, electronics packaging
Anti-static (coated)10⁹–10¹¹ Ω/sq<5 sDisplay glazing, general protection

All ESD grades are extruded from 100% virgin PC with permanent (non-wash-off) conductivity. We supply surface-resistivity test reports per batch, and cut-to-size panels with edge finishing for electronics manufacturing.

What is the surface resistance of ESD polycarbonate?

Static-dissipative grade: 10⁶–10⁹ Ω/sq; conductive grade: 10⁴–10⁶ Ω/sq. Both meet ANSI/ESD S20.20 style requirements for work surfaces and covers.

Is ESD polycarbonate the same as anti-static film?

No — ESD PC has conductivity built into the material (permanent, cannot wash off), while anti-static film is a temporary surface treatment. For electronics protection panels, use true ESD PC.

Can you make ESD polycarbonate panels to size?

Yes — cut, drilled and edge-finished to your drawings with per-batch resistivity reports, from 100×100 mm samples to 2100×12000 mm sheets.
