Polycarbonate equipment covers: the four demands a machine enclosure must meet

An equipment cover is not just a window — it has to stay clear under chemical exposure, take knocks without shattering, allow the operator to see in, and often meet a guarding standard. These four demands pull in different directions, and the sheet spec is a compromise between them decided by which failure would stop the line.

Chemical resistance: the limit most people hit first

Polycarbonate is tough but chemically sensitive. It tolerates dilute acids, greases and most cutting fluids, but it is attacked by many solvents, strong alkalis and some cleaning agents — contact causes crazing, then cracking under stress. If the cover meets solvents, cleaning chemicals or aggressive coolants, either a chemical-resistant coated grade or an alternative panel material is needed. Tell us what the cover will be wiped down or splashed with; this single answer often decides the material.

Impact and containment

The reason polycarbonate is specified over acrylic for guarding is containment — it holds together and absorbs energy instead of shattering into fragments if a tool or workpiece is thrown. Thickness follows the energy to be contained: light covers over low-energy mechanisms use 3–4 mm; guards near rotating tooling or high-energy motion need 6–12 mm, and machine-tool guarding is governed by EN ISO 14120 impact requirements rather than by looks.

Optical clarity that survives the shop floor

An operator has to see the process. A cover that scratches to a haze within weeks defeats the purpose, so an abrasion-resistant hard coat is worth specifying for covers that are cleaned frequently or exposed to airborne particles. Hard-coated polycarbonate keeps its clarity far longer than uncoated sheet on a working machine.

Heat and fit

Covers near motors, drives or heat sources see elevated temperatures; polycarbonate holds its properties to around 115–120 °C continuous, well above most enclosures, but check the local hot spots. Remember the sheet expands ~0.065 mm/m/°C — a cover that fits perfectly cold will bind or bow if fixed rigidly and then heated, so fixings must allow movement.

  • What the cover encloses and the energy of the motion behind it
  • Chemicals, coolants or cleaning agents it will contact
  • Whether a guarding standard (e.g. EN ISO 14120) applies
  • Visibility requirement and cleaning frequency (drives hard coat)
  • Size, cutouts, fixing method and any hot spots nearby
