Polycarbonate for pergolas and canopies: what survives sun, hail and wind
A pergola roof lives outdoors unprotected, so it is specified for three loads a normal roof rarely sees at once — full UV exposure, hail impact, and wind uplift on a lightweight structure. The sheet that handles all three is not the cheapest one, and the failure modes are predictable: yellowing from UV, cracking from hail, and panels lifting off in wind because they were fixed like a solid roof.
UV: the layer that decides the lifespan
A pergola sees more direct sun than almost any other roof, so co-extruded UV protection is not optional here — a coated or unprotected sheet yellows within a season or two of full exposure. Ask for co-extruded UV on the outward face, 50–80 microns, with a warranty that states yellowing index, not just a year count. This single spec separates a canopy that still looks good in year eight from one that is brown and brittle in year two.
Impact: why polycarbonate beats every alternative outdoors
Polycarbonate is roughly 200 times more impact-resistant than glass and far tougher than acrylic, which is what makes it the material for hail country. Multiwall adds a further cushion — the cellular structure absorbs impact energy. For pergolas in hail-prone regions, a 10 mm multiwall or 4–6 mm solid sheet shrugs off impacts that would shatter glass or crack acrylic.
Wind uplift: the fixing that most installers get wrong
A pergola roof is light and open on the sides, so wind gets underneath and lifts. Panels fixed with too few points, or with holes drilled tight, either pull off the fixings or crack around them. The rule is oversized holes for thermal movement, fixings at the manufacturer’s spacing not “a few screws”, and a profile that clamps the panel edge rather than relying on point fixings alone. Clear, bronze or opal — the comfort choice
Clear passes the most light but gives no shade; bronze and opal cut glare and heat for seating areas underneath. For a pergola people sit under in summer, a tinted or opal sheet is usually more comfortable than clear, which can turn the space into a greenhouse.

Install with a minimum 5° slope for drainage, aluminium profiles with EPDM gaskets, and allow 3–5 mm expansion gap per metre of sheet length. UV-stabilised side faces the sun — our sheets are UV-coated on both sides.
What thickness polycarbonate is best for a pergola roof?
For most pergolas 6 mm twin-wall (up to 1 m span) or 10 mm twin-wall (up to 1.5 m) is ideal — light enough for simple frames, with UV protection and 70–80% light transmission.
Does polycarbonate pergola roofing block UV?
Yes — our sheets have a UV-coextruded layer on both sides, blocking over 99% of UV while letting 70–80% of visible light through. It is the standard pergola roofing choice for this reason.
Can I install polycarbonate pergola sheets myself?
Yes — twin-wall sheets are light (10 mm = 12 kg/m²) and cut with a circular saw. Use aluminium profiles, EPDM gaskets and expansion-gap spacing as above; we supply cut-to-size panels to make it even easier.
How hot does it get under a polycarbonate pergola?
Multiwall PC reduces heat gain by 30–50% compared with no roof (and roughly 25% less than glass due to lower solar gain), keeping the space usable on hot days. Bronze or tinted sheets cut glare further.
