It is mainly used for aircraft (cockpit windshields/portholes) and spacecraft (satellite structural components).
Polycarbonate in aerospace and aviation: impact, weight and optical clarity
Aerospace polycarbonate is chosen where a part must be simultaneously light, impact-resistant and optically clear — canopies, windows, interior panels and instrument covers — under conditions that punish lesser materials. The material's strength-to-weight ratio and near-unbreakable toughness are exactly what aviation values, but the application demands are unusually strict.
Impact resistance where failure is not an option
Polycarbonate's defining property — roughly 200 times the impact resistance of glass — is why it is used in aircraft canopies and windows that must resist bird strike and pressure without shattering. It deforms and absorbs energy rather than fracturing, keeping the crew and cabin protected when glass would fail catastrophically.
Weight is performance in aviation
At about half the weight of glass, polycarbonate glazing and interior panels cut mass directly, which in aviation means fuel savings and payload capacity over the life of the aircraft. Interior panels, instrument covers and partition glazing use PC precisely because every part is weighed against what it costs to carry.
Optical clarity and coatings
Cockpit and cabin transparencies need optical-grade clarity that survives abrasion, cleaning and UV at altitude. Aerospace-grade polycarbonate carries hard coatings and UV protection so transparencies stay clear rather than hazing, and interior parts often need to meet flammability and smoke requirements for the cabin environment.
