Polycarbonate roofing for poultry and livestock houses: light, heat and ammonia
A livestock roof is a controlled environment, so the glazing is specified for three things the animals below are sensitive to — controlled daylight, insulation against heat swings, and resistance to the ammonia and washdown chemicals of an animal house. A roof that leaks heat, lets in harsh direct sun, or degrades in ammonia costs the operator in feed conversion, stock stress and replacement.
Controlled daylight, not raw sun
Poultry and livestock are stressed by hotspots and glare, and productivity is tied to a managed light regime. Opal or diffusing multiwall spreads daylight evenly across the floor instead of casting bright patches, reducing stress and pecking behaviour, while still cutting the electricity of all-day artificial lighting. Clear sheet is usually the wrong choice here — even diffusion matters more than maximum brightness.
Insulation against the heat and cold that hurt stock
Temperature swings hit feed conversion and mortality directly. Multiwall polycarbonate insulates far better than single-skin sheet — the air-filled cells slow heat transfer, so the building stays warmer at night and resists overheating under midday sun. A thicker multiwall (10–16 mm) buys more thermal stability for climates with big day-night swings, reducing the load on heating and ventilation.
Ammonia and washdown resistance
An animal house atmosphere is corrosive — ammonia, humidity and periodic chemical washdown degrade many materials. Polycarbonate resists ammonia far better than many roofing plastics, and a co-extruded UV surface handles washdown better than an uncoated sheet. Specify the UV/weather face and confirm the sheet is rated for the cleaning regime, so the roof lasts the life of the building rather than clouding and embrittling early.
Condensation control matters more here
A humid animal house drips if condensation is not managed. Multiwall channels must run down-slope to drain, and an anti-drip surface stops condensation falling on stock and feed below. This is not optional in a livestock building — dripping cold water on animals is a welfare and health problem.
